Using Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) as model species the project will try to achieve these main goals:
- Identify non-invasive and reliable behavioural indicators that can be used to monitor and quantify acute and chronic stress levels in farmed fish
- Validate and quantify these indicators as proxy measures for stress using immunological and physiological methods
- Develop databases and protocols for on farm monitoring of environmental data and the validated stress level indicators
- Develop an expert system for assessment and management of stress levels in aquaculture production system based on analysis of monitored parameters
- Implement, test and refine the database, protocols and expert system (FAST-TOOL) in commercial aquaculture in periods with potentially high an low stress levels
- Identify the prerequisites and market mechanisms for a successful implementation of FAST-TOOL in the aquaculture industry, and estimate the costs and benefits of implementation of FAST-TOOL for the fish farmer
